While I liked the characters, and some of their interaction, I wish the author had researched the period more, or made it clearer that this was an "alternate earth" of the "medievalesque" times.

There was just too much inconsistency in the "world building" which felt sloppy. Adalira's father is a Prince and yet he spent little time at Court?The two lead characters lived within less than a day's ride of each other and yet had never heard of each other? Castles in the medieval countryside close enough to have "a season"? Bastian considering himself ugly because of some battle scars? Adalira riding out with no one but her companion to another house without asking permission (or at least letting her parents know?) Tea parties? Nope. Either it's an entirely different world, or it's medieval England and the writing should be consistent about the setting.

On the other hand, the main characters, Bastian and Adalira, have some nicely drawn qualities. The secondary characters, their friends and family are also well defined and individual, but could also have been fleshed out without dragging the plot around. (For instance, the writing in the letters between the two could have been summarized or edited.)

Sad, because it had so much potential.

This book showed that women are not just born to have children, look pretty, and obey men. Adelira, a headstrong remarkable young lady, is thrown into a new "battle" which teaches her to listen to her mind but also her heart. Bastian, a scarred fierce man, is thrown into the "battle" along with Adelira and he learns to love parts of himself that he feared would turn any and everyone away.
C.L. Foster and E.R. Rada have teamed up to deliver a fresh new take on historical romance that is sure to leave readers in awe. Heart of War is set in the majestic era of knights and kings and the Hundred Years War. Adalira and Bastian are the children of nobles with their hearts set on the battlefield. Adalira is expected to be prim and proper as a Lady usually is, but she longs to wield a sword. Bastian is expected to be a diplomat, but his dream is to be a knight. When they meet, they just might be each other's key to breaking free of the mold and winning their families over.

I had the brilliant opportunity to beta-read this lovely story and I fell in love from the beginning. The characters are very well-rounded and easy to love, each of them unique with a great deal of personality. The world in which they live is vividly detailed, leaving nothing to the imagination while allowing the reader to become lost in the story. I'd consider this artwork at its finest, a picture painted in words dripping with creativity, talent, and passion for the craft.

The collaboration between C.L. Foster and up-and-coming author E.R. Rada is genius. They compliment each other well without breaking the story. While they each have their own writing style, the chapters flow together nearly seamlessly and, if you had not known better, it would be easy to believe that this book was penned by only one author.

I am looking forward to the next book by these two inspiring novelists, be it a collaboration or solo work. If you haven't picked up Heart of War yet, I urge you to do yourself a favor and take a chance on it.

P.S. My favorite character is Ezra. I'd say it was almost like he was written specifically for me. *wink* <3
I liked the characters and they were well drawn. Also, I really liked the love story, but the dialogue or 21 st. Century ideals put together were just a little bit too hard to overcome. Shakespeare, it was not. Take heart! I'm a tough critic.
This was a fun, light hearted, and romantic read. It was sort of a PG version of a Le Veque novel which I intend as a compliment. I really enjoyed the dialogue and the likeable characters. I didn't take it seriously historically but just allowed myself to be entertained.
Can't wait to read the next one. Kept me hooked, read the whole thing in just a few hours,didn't want to put it down. Hope Adalira and Bastian are in the next stories. Can't wait to see what happens with Ryland and Nyota. This was a good clean read that allowed you to enjoy the story and romance without having to read or skip over explicit love scene s if you'd rather not have to read those. Great job guys,really enjoyed it.
