I’m a cover girl by nature by which I mean the packaging matters to me. I would’ve read Jill’s newest book regardless, but I found the portrayal of Rachel particularly striking because the model’s entire look rings so true. She’s beautiful but with an earthy quality to remind us immediately of Rachel's shepherdess days. Thus beginning the journey before the book’s even been opened. I’ve read my share of Rachel/Jacob/Leah stories, & in most of them I’ve been able to tell which sister the author favored. Being a second wife who didn’t have children with the love of her life, I admit to being more of a Rachel devotee. However, I did have my eyes opened to Leah’s suffering when I read another fictional retelling several years ago. Then Jill Eileen Smith, a tremendously hard-working & talented Biblical fiction author, gifts us with this wonderfully balanced portrayal of both sisters, Jacob, the maid servants, & the children. With a sigh of contentment, my love for Rachel returned without eradicating any compassion I’d gained for Leah. Jill does a marvelous job of bringing each character to life through glimpses of each sister's personal struggles (and Jacob's) in a uniquely complicated situation. Rachel & Leah seemed more authentic in their flaws & strengths than in any of the other stories I’ve read, endearing Jill to this reader's heart yet again. One additional aspect I thoroughly enjoyed was the picture of the intimacy between Rachel & Joseph which I’d never given much thought. Certainly she would have greatly influenced Joseph’s character & perhaps given him the foundation to endure & succeed in Egypt. If you want a fresh look at a timeless love story, I highly recommend Rachel.

Rachel A Novel Wives of the Patriarchs Volume 3 Jill Eileen Smith 9780800734312 Books Reviews
Jill Smith is so good at showing how we all struggle in life with her story of Rachel, Leah and Jacob and their families. The story made me feel sad, sorry, hopeless and hopeful at the same time. It reminds me that God indeed works together for the good of us all.
I loved this book so much! She really brought the story of Rachel & Jacob to live for those of us that simply couldn't understand how it may have unfolded, when reading the story in our Bible. The many emotions between Rachel & Leah are truly believable as you read...it makes one wonder how they got through it. The character traits she gave Jacob, despite his faults, are wonderful. I was so sad to see this book end...would love for it to pick up with the life of Joseph.
I loved the stories of Abraham and Sarah & Isaac and Rebekah. But, story of Rachel should be the story of Rachel AND Leah. The conflict and jealousy between these two women struggling with where they fit into Jacob's life and God's plans captured and held my attention throughout the whole novel. Jacob's struggle with his actions vs God's plan for his live was a very intimate view into what must have been a daily struggle, greater than but not unlike one we deal with every day. Outstanding achievement, Mrs. Smith!
This book has many angles in which to be challenged to endure and then become victorious over adversity. Rachel's struggles are no different from ours. Thus, overcoming can also be similar.
I really really loved this book it was beautifully written. I liked how I could relate to the characters even Rachel (who I usually dislike). I find her a little selfish at times, but in the book she was a person not some brat I would normally role my eyes to, no offense Rachel. She was real, I felt her sorrow and understood her jealousy even though being honest I rolled my eyes a few times. She loved him. I think sometimes it would have been hard for a women not to fall in love with a man after God's heart whoever it maybe Jacob, King David, Solomon, Abraham, Moses....
Leah, my small heart reaches out to her. I always felt empathy for her and Hagar. I have always loved the story of Jacob and his whole family, but I always for someone reason had my heart ache for the poor girl. Even as a small girl I could feel her pain, every women would want to be loved by their husband, the author, made her heart's desires known to the reader. You could feel her sadness...when she wished he would care for her like he cared for Rachel, but said she also wished her traitorous heart would stop wanting his affection. I loved the way after their first child, Reuben was born she knew Jacob's voice because her heart would sing... I felt the tension between the sisters. The Lord rewarded her faith because from her children (Judah) comes Jesus Christ. The lord choose the unloved as he constantly did, like with us.
I felt sorry for Jacob who put up with it. In the end neither girls won nor lost. I am glad they made up and hope in reality they did. I have a sister and even though I don't know her I know I would cry if she died and I hope Leah did too. What sister even though she might want to rip her sisters to pieces not love her anyway? At least even a little.
I believe Leah loved him and wanted to marry him, but because of her faith asked God to take her feelings for Jacob away, but in the end her father's plotting "forced" her to marry Jacob even though she was willing. Her faith in God amazes me and honestly if not for Leah I would have put the book down, no jk. I almost read a Rachel book, moment the girl in the book complained about her "evil" sister Leah, yeah, that book was back collecting dust at the library faster than you could say bye!
I actually liked both girls, felt their pain, but in the end both girls lived. Which is the main point of the story, not that they are a story, but that they lived. The author used both girls to tell the tale of the making of the family of the King of heaven and earth, my Yeshua, Jesus Christ.... <3
This book does great job outlining the consequences of cheating. We all know the story of Jacob. However when the blanks filled in by a gifted writer it allows you to understand what generAtional consequences sin can produce. Jacob stole Esau birthright and had to flee. Laban cheated Jacob out of 14 years of his life to marry Leah. Jacob continued to be cheated by his father-in-law for yet another 6 years. In the end God was always in control and Jacob was blessed for his perseverance.
I loved the way the whole story is told and how true to the biblical account it stays.
